Aromatherapy and the Brain

• Lozenges containing lavender oil, extracts from hops, lemon balm and oat induce a state of relaxation and may improve coping with psychological and emotional stress. published in 2004, Germany

• A combination of anti-depression medication and lavandula tincture was more effective and worked more rapidly than medication alone for treating depression. Tehran University of Medical Sciences, February 2003

• Aromas of lavender and rosemary had measurable effects on EEG activity, alertness, and mood. Lavender subjects showed increased beta power, had less depressed mood, reported feeling more relaxed and performed math computations faster and more accurately. Journal of Neuroscience, December 1998

• The effects of inhalation of 4 essential oils were measured for impact on stress responses. Physical symptoms decreased, anxiety scores were low, and perceived stress scores were low, showing that aroma inhalation is an effective stress management method.
